The preschooler's love of pretending is reflected in the stories and television programs she enjoys, the way she plays, the way she dresses, and the art she creates. Give props for playing "all grown up," or gifts that stir the imagination.

Rolling in the Dough. For hours of hands-on fun and creativity, give Play-Doh or homemade dough with a rolling pin and an assortment of big cookie cutters.

All the World’s a Stage. Give an assortment of puppets and a puppet stage. With a few yards of fabric and a couple of tension rods, you can construct a doorway stage. Simply drape fabric over the tension rod, or sew parting curtains embellished with trim. Sew pockets on the curtain backs for prop storage.

Let’s Pretend. A trunk full of dress-up clothes, shoes, gloves, purses, and jewelry will inspire hours of "let's pretend." Hats and other headgear also make fun gifts. Choose from engineer hats, fire fighter hats, baseball caps, football helmets, cowboy hats, sailor hats, tiaras, berets, derbies, and crowns to start. ADA Discount Dancewear, www.adadance.com, carries a wide assortment of hats and accessories.

Freedom of Expression. Assemble a collection of project supplies: washable markers, construction paper, safety scissors, crayons, glue, paints, brushes, and tape.

Books on Tape. In your own voice, make an audio tape recording of a child's favorite book(s). Be sure to let the child know when to turn the pages.

Around the Blocks. Give blocks, blocks, and more blocks: wooden blocks, plastic blocks, giant cardboard blocks, magnetic blocks. To accessorize the block structures for creative play, include small animals (farm, zoo, and wild), cars, trucks, dinosaurs, and people.

It’s in the Bag. If you are handy at sewing, make drawstring bags in a variety of sizes for storing toys and other childhood treasures.

Old Time Fun. Remember the Slinky, the Etch-A-Sketch, Lincoln Logs, Erector sets and Tinkertoys? These classic toys, along with other favorites from yesteryear, can still be found at many toy stores and department stores.

The List Goes On and On. A rhythm band set, a chalkboard and chalks, a tricycle, a dollhouse and furnishings, a painting easel with paints and paper, a train set (nonelectric), and audio books are also great gifts for three- and four-year-olds.
