What do
DINKS (Dual Income, No Kids), boomers, flower children, empty
nesters, single parents, blended families, and couples with 2.3
children all have in common? The answer strikes close to home. Any
of them can become your new neighbor. And regardless of shape, size,
or family status, each has some degree of postmoving syndrome—a
mixture of anticipation, exhaustion, and disorientation. So circle
the welcome wagons and add your personal touches to the following
ideas.
Organize
a welcome-to-the-neighborhood party for new move-ins after they've
settled in a bit.
Deliver a
move-in survival kit to new neighbors. Include such items as paper
plates and cups, plastic flatware, a can opener, a phone book, a
neighborhood directory, a bottle of aspirin, and a flower
arrangement. For families with small children, include crayons and
coloring books to keep them busy while Mom and Dad unpack.
Arrange
for a few weeks of such seasonal services as lawn mowing, leaf
raking, and snow removal while new neighbors are getting settled in
their new house.
Give a
town tour to show them the location of stores, schools, parks, and
other services.
