Be it castle or condo, purchasing and moving into a new abode is cause for celebration. Often, the celebration takes the form of a housewarming—an open-house hosted by the new homeowners and attended by families bearing gifts for the new house. One might also wish to take a gift to a shower or party given by friends and relatives for the new homeowners, or when visiting a friend's new apartment or house for the first time. Such gifts need not be costly or extravagant. Consider the following hearth-warming ideas.

Outfit a small tool box (a combination tool box/step stool would be fabulous) with picture and mirror hangers, hollow door and wall anchors, nails, screws, hooks, a flashlight, light bulbs, and small hand tools such as hammers, screwdrivers, and wrenches.

Choose a gift for the fireplace. Ideas include fireplace gloves, a cast iron fire starter, a log cart, a fireplace screen, a hearth mat, long matches, or a fireplace popcorn popper.

Home furnishings and accessories make nice housewarming gifts if you are familiar with the recipient's tastes. Gift choices include dried flower arrangements, bar stools, coat racks, umbrella stands, bookends, kitchen/bed/bath linens, nesting tables, canister sets, spice racks, and area rugs.

To adorn the house's exterior, give a weather vane, new house numbers, a brass door knocker or kickplate, a doormat, decorative door knobs or handles, a custom mailbox, solar night lights, or the services of a landscaper.

Habitat for Humanity, www.habitat.org offers a wide variety of card sets, books, wearables, and kids stuff perfect for giving to new homeowners and their families. Sharing Habitat gift certificates are also available.

Other gift ideas for new homeowners include a folding stepladder, state-of-the art kitchen appliances, coffee table books, a guest book, an indoor/outdoor digital thermometer, closet and drawer organizers, or a subscription to the local newspaper.

Give a customized map of the community. Highlight doctor's offices, schools, shopping centers, playgrounds, parks, libraries, and the DMV and add such helpful information as library hours and telephone numbers for trash collection, newspaper delivery, licensing bureaus (car, pets, business), and utilities.

To a do-it-yourselfer, give a book or two on home repairs or do-it-yourself projects and a gift certificate to the local hardware store or home improvement center.
